For the past year, Bonnie and I have been taking lessons in agility. Each week we join a group of other dog owners and learn how to teach our dogs to jump over hurdles, run through tunnels, and walk on teeter-totters, among other things.

Bonnie is a good student. She pays attention and tries to go exactly where I tell her to go. She enjoys the rewards she gets after each run. After she completes a set of obstacles, she gets a delicious treat. She works hard to do well because she's having fun and because she loves her cookies. Controlling a dog without a leash isn't easy. But Bonnie does well most of the time.

One day Bonnie had more fun than usual. We were running through the obstacles when suddenly, two big black crows flew directly over her head. Bonnie's instinct took over and she left my side and ran faster than ever, chasing those birds. She ran a long way away from me. Because we work in a large fenced-in area, she wasn't in any danger of running into traffic. I'm sure that Bonnie thought that this was delightful fun, but I didn't find it so amusing. I gave Bonnie my best command to return to me and she came running back as fast as she could. I was happy that I had practiced Bonnie's 'come here' command so much.

Check out this recent video. You won't see the birds, but you will see an adorable collie dog.
